CMD Commands List

ARP – Displays and modifies the IP-to-Physical address translation tables by Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)

AT – Schedules commands and programs to run on a computer at a specific time and date. The Schedule service must be running to use AT command.

ATTRIB – Displays or changes file attributes

CACLS – Change file permission

CALL – Call one batch program from another

CD or CHDIR – Displays the name of or changes the current directory

CHKDSK – Checks a disk and displays a status report

CHKNTFS – Displays or modifies the checking of disk at boot time

CIPHER – Displays or alters the encryption (files) on NTFS partition

CMD – Starts a new CMD Shell

COLOR – Sets the default console foreground and background color.

COMP – Compares the contents of two files or sets of files.

COMPACT – Compress files or folder on an NTFS partition

COMPRESS – Compress individual files on an NTFS partition

CONVERT – Converts FAT volumes to NTFS

COPY – Copy one or more files to another location

CSSCRIPTS – Runs scripts using the command line-based script host.

DATE – Displays or sets the date

DEBUG – Runs DEBUG, a program testing and editing tool

DEL or ERASE – Deletes one or more files.

DIR – Displays a list of files and subdirectories in a directory

DISKCOPY – Copies the contents of one floppy disk to another

DOSKEY – Edits command line, recalls Win2000 commands, and creates macros

ECHO – Displays messages or turns command-echoing on or off

EXIT – Quits the CMD

EXPAND – Expands one or more compressed files.

FC – Compares two files or sets of files and displays the differences between them

FIND – Searches for text string in a file or files

FINDSTR – Searches for a string in files.

FOR – Runs a specified command for each file in a set of files

FORMAT – Formats a disk for use with Win2000

FTP – Transfer files to and from a computer running FTP server service

FTYPE – Displays or modifies file types used in file extension associations

GOTO – Directs CMD.EXE to a labeled line in a batch program

HELP – Provides help information for Win2000 commands

IF – Performs conditional processing in batch programs

IPCONFIG – Displays all current TCP/IP network configuration values

LABEL – Creates, changes or deletes the volume label of a disk

LPQ – Displays the state of remote lpd queue

LPR – Sends a print job to a network printer

MAKECAB – Loads Cabinet Maker

MEM – Displays the amount of used and free memory in your system

MKDIR or MD – Creates a directory

MODE – Configures system devices

MORE – Displays output one screen at a time

MOVE – Moves files and renames files and directories

NBTSTAT – Displays protocols statistics and current TCP/IP connections using NBT (NetBIOS over TCP/IP)

NET – Manage Network resources

NET USE – Connects a computer to shared resources or disconnect a computer from a shared resources. When used without options, it lists the computer connections.

NETDOM – Domain Manager

NETSH – The NetShell utility is a command line, scripting interface for configuring and monitoring win2000. (Another source – Configure Network Protocols)

NETSTAT – Displays protocol statistics and current TCP/IP network connections

NETSVC – Commands-line Service Controller

NSLOOKUP – Name server lookup

NTBACKUP – Backup folders to a tape

NTRIGHTS – Edit NT user accounts rights

PATH – Displays or sets a search path for executable files

PATHPING – Loads a route-tracing tool

PAUSE – Suspends processing of a batch program and displays the message “Press any key to continue …”

PING – Verifies connections to a remote computer or computers. This command is available only if the TCP/IP protocol has been installed.

PRINT – Print a text file

PROMPT – Changes the CMD command prompt

POPD – Changes to the directory stored by PUSHD commands

PUSH – Stores the current directory for use by POPD command, then changes to the specified directory

RCP – Copies files to and from a computer running the RCP service

RECOVER – Recovers readable information from a bad or defective disk

REM – Records comments (remarks) in a batch file or CONFIG.SYS

REN or RENAME – Rename file or files

REPLACE – Replace files

RMDIR or RD – Removes (deletes) a directory

ROUTE – Manipulates network routing tables.

RSH – Runs commands on remote hosts running the RSH service

RUNAS – Allows a user to run specific tools and programs with different permissions than the user’s current logon provides

SET – Displays, sets, or removes CMD environmental variables

SETLOCAL – Begins localization of environment changes in batch file.

SETVER – Sets the version number that MS-DOS reports to a program

SHIFT – Changes the position of replaceable parameters in a batch file

SORT – Reads input, sorts data, and writes the results to the screen, to a file, or to another device

START – Starts a separate window to run a specified program or command

SUBST – Associates a path with a drive letter

TELNET – Provides user support for the Telnet protocol

TIME – Displays or sets the system time

TITLE – Sets the window title for the command prompt window

TRACERT – Trace route to a remote host

TREE – Graphically displays the folder structure of a drive or path

TYPE – Displays the contents of a text file or files

VER – Displays the Win2000 version number

VERIFY – Tells whether to verify that your files are written correctly to a disk

VOL – Displays the disk volume label and serial number, if they exist

XCOPY – Copies files and directories trees.
